LEGION POST AND BOY SCOUT TROOP 540

CONDUCT MEMORIAL DAY COLLECTION FOR SOLDIERS OVERSEAS

Items can be dropped off at locations around Monroe-Woodbury

Or at the American Legion

Some of the suggested items include books, magazines, shampoo, sunscreen, writing paper, pens, packaged snacks, socks and cell phones in any condition. The Monroe Town Hall, Monroe Free Library, and the Education Center on Route 32 are just a few of the drop-off locations. A more detailed list of items and locations is posted on the American Legion website: www.legionpost488.org, and on www.CordiallyYoursOnTheWeb.com.

The deadline for dropping off items at the locations is Friday, May 4.

The Legion’s on-going cell phone collection program has brought in 6000 cell phones to date. Says Bob Martell, Vice Commander at the Legion, “These cell phones are sent to a recycling center and the company then sends the troops prepaid phone cards to use to call home. These cell phones can be in any condition, and we thank everyone who has already donated.”

Bob Martell is in regular contact with service units in Iraq and elsewhere and received this email from John Carr, a soldier currently serving in the Pacific:

“We sometimes lack the small items that are taken for granted…You would not believe the smile that a letter, a magazine or even a candy bar puts on the face of a soldier after completing a day of rigorous missions. It is the boxes and letters from people just like you that greatly improves the moral of the soldiers within the Unit. So, thank you for your kindness and generosity and God Bless.”

Julia Young is a 16 year old Monroe Woodbury High School student who lives in Harriman, New York. On Saturday, March 14th, she went out for what was to be a fun "night with the girls" to make s'mores and read stories around a small camp fire.  When the fire wouldn't stay lit, gas was poured on it to have it burn brightly.  Within minutes, Julia was engulfed in flames.  She was taken by helicopter to Northern Westchester Hospital with 65% of her body covered with third degree burns.  Afer a month in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, she became strong enough to be moved to the Burn Unit there.  After another month of numerous skin grafts and other surgeries, she has been moved to Shriners Hospital for Children Burn Care Unit in Boston, MA.  Julia will remain there for months ahead, having various surgical procedures, occupational, physical and psycological therapy.

Michele and Gerry Young have left their jobs, and are staying with her during this difficult time.  In addition to emotional trauma, the family lost their medical insurance several months ago.  This financial stress has added another dimension to an already difficult situation.  They are surrounded and supported by their family and friends.
